This book is as delightful as it helpful to a writer seeking inspiration as well as practical help. Plummer and Cannon model the art of memoir writing with their distinctive and personable voices, and their combined years of both writing and teaching writing. I benefited from the book's organization and topical prompts, and feel that I now have a greater grasp on writing about my life. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to think, laugh, and write.
I know this book is the first "how-to" book I've read that focuses upon memoirs, and so I can't compare. But it is hard to believe another offering could be both educational and fun! I have hopes that my memoir can be insig-htful and delightful because these 2 authors show how my boring life is indeed unique. And as an added bonus, readers walk away feeling like they made two new wonderful friends - Ms. Louise and Ms. Ann.
You Are Boring is a fun and engaging read. Ann Cannon and Louise Plummer are entertaining in a way that that both inspires and motivates you to write your memoir - no matter how boring you think you are! I will be using it as my workbook to flesh out my own life story and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to do the same.
Loved this book. The best ways to learn how to write are to read good writing and to put your own pen to paper. This book helps you do both. I loved the writing--clear, engaging, humorous--and really enjoyed the writing assignments at the end of each chapter. Provocative and useful. A great read and a great experience!
Turns out, I like being told what to do, which goes against everything I thought I knew about myself. After many minor attempts to write my stories, I’ve made great progress running through the book once. The formula is, read what the co-authors bring to mind, then write. I will be using this over and over. Favorite writing prompt - turning point. Biggest laugh - Dark Fortune Cookies list. Remembering is good for my soul. Happy I’m getting my memories down, before I forget everything!
